Account Access Issues

Having trouble signing in? This guide covers password resets, Google sign-in, temporary lockouts and email verification.

Common Sign-In Problems

  • Forgotten password - use "Forgot password?" on the sign-in page
  • Email not recognised - you may have signed up with a different address, or with Google
  • Signed up with Google - use "Sign in with Google" rather than the email form
  • Locked out after several wrong passwords - wait and try again (see below)
  • Email not verified - your dashboard, saved reports, extensive audits and Headnoted Pro stay locked until you click the verification link. The free check on the homepage works without it
  • Cookies blocked - Headnoted needs cookies to keep you signed in
  • Signed up with Footnoted - our sister tool has separate accounts, so a Footnoted sign-in does not work here. Create a Headnoted account instead

Resetting Your Password

  1. 1 Go to the sign-in page and click "Forgot password?"
  2. 2 Enter your email address
  3. 3 Open the email we send and click the link in it - it works for an hour
  4. 4 Choose a new password: at least 8 characters, with upper and lower case letters, a number and a symbol, and not one that has appeared in a known data breach
  5. 5 Sign in with the new password

If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder, make sure you typed the address you signed up with, and ask for another.

Locked Out After Wrong Passwords

After 5 wrong passwords in a row, the sign-in form stops accepting attempts for about a minute. The form tells you exactly how long to wait.

  • Wait until the form lets you try again
  • If you are not sure of your password, reset it instead of guessing
  • A successful sign-in clears the count

Signing In With Google

If you created your account with Google, there is no Headnoted password to reset:

  • Use "Sign in with Google" on the sign-in page
  • Make sure the browser is signed in to the right Google account
  • You can set a password later from Settings if you would rather sign in with your email address too

Verifying Your Email

  • The verification link works for an hour
  • The verification page lets you send a fresh link if it has expired or never arrived
  • Signing up with Google verifies your email for you

Account Security

Never share your password. Headnoted support will never ask for it. If you think someone else has signed in to your account, reset your password straight away and contact support.
