What we check.
Six areas. Clear priorities. See what helps search engines crawl, index and understand your page.
Your score runs from 0 to 100. Crawling and indexing carry the most weight: a page search engines cannot reach or are told not to index cannot rank at all. Each check shows its impact, so you can tackle the biggest barriers first.
Crawling & indexing
-
Page reachable
high impactIf your server or a firewall answers our crawler with 401, 403, 429 or 503, search engine crawlers are likely to get the same answer.
-
Google and Bing allowed
high impactWhether robots.txt lets Googlebot and Bingbot crawl the page. Bing's index also feeds DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and Ecosia, so one rule can hide you from several search engines.
-
Other search engines allowed
low impactWhether smaller engines and specialist crawlers (Googlebot-Image, Applebot, DuckDuckBot and YandexBot) are blocked. A block here only warns.
-
Indexable
high impactWhether a noindex directive (in the page or the X-Robots-Tag header) keeps the page out of search results. A nosnippet directive only warns: the page can rank, but without a text snippet.
-
Readable without JavaScript
high impactHow much text is in the HTML your server sends. Search engines can render JavaScript, but often later and not always fully, so content in the HTML is the safe choice.
-
XML sitemap
medium impactA sitemap at /sitemap.xml or listed in robots.txt, so crawlers can find all your pages.
Titles & metadata
-
Page title
high impactPresent, and 30–60 characters, so it is less likely to be cut short in search results.
-
Meta description
medium impactPresent, and 70–160 characters. Search engines often show it under your title, though they can choose other text from the page.
-
Canonical URL
medium impactA rel="canonical" link. One that points to the page itself passes; one that points elsewhere warns, because it asks search engines to index a different address.
-
Social preview tags
low impactog:title, og:description and og:image, for a proper preview wherever the link is shared.
Headings & content
-
One clear H1
medium impactA single main heading that says what the page is about.
-
Clear sections
medium impactH2 and H3 subheadings that break the page into parts readers and search engines can follow.
-
Title and H1 agree
medium impactWhether the title and the main heading are about the same topic, so the page sends one clear signal.
-
Substantial content
high impactEnough specific text in the main content to cover the topic properly. Thin pages rarely rank for much.
-
Internal links
medium impactLinks to other pages on your site, which help crawlers find them and show how your pages relate.
-
Image alt text
medium impactAlt text on images, so search engines (and screen readers) know what each one shows.
Structured data
-
Structured data (JSON-LD)
medium impactWhether the page describes itself in JSON-LD, the structured data format Google recommends, and whether every block is valid JSON. A trailing comma is enough for a block to be ignored.
-
Who you are (Organization / WebSite)
medium impactOrganization or WebSite schema, ideally with sameAs links to your official profiles, so search engines can connect your brand across the web.
-
What this page is (rich results)
medium impactSchema for the page itself, such as Article, Product, LocalBusiness, Recipe or Event, which makes it eligible for rich results. Eligible is not guaranteed: search engines decide when to show them.
-
Breadcrumbs
low impactBreadcrumbList schema, which can show your site's structure in place of a bare address in search results.
Technical & mobile
-
Served over HTTPS
medium impactWhether the page is served securely. HTTPS is a confirmed, if light, ranking signal, and browsers warn visitors about pages without it.
-
Mobile-friendly viewport
high impactA viewport meta tag, without which phones show a zoomed-out desktop layout. Google indexes the mobile version of your pages.
-
Fast server response
medium impactHow quickly the HTML arrives at our crawler. A slow server delays everything else on the page.
-
Language declared
low impactA lang attribute on the <html> element, so search engines know which language the page is in.
Trust & freshness
-
Author or publisher shown
medium impactA byline, an author meta tag or author/publisher in the schema — who stands behind the content, which is part of what Google calls E-E-A-T.
-
Fresh, dated content
medium impactA published or updated date, and whether it is within the last year.
-
Cites its sources
low impactLinks from the main content to the external sources behind your claims.
6 crawlers, checked against your robots.txt.
These are the user-agent tokens each search engine documents for its crawler. Blocking a main search crawler removes the page from that engine's results; blocking one of the other crawlers only warns.
| User-agent token | Run by | Used for | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Google Search | Main search | |
| Bingbot | Microsoft | Bing (also DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and Ecosia results) | Main search |
| Googlebot-Image | Google Images | Other | |
| Applebot | Apple | Safari suggestions and Spotlight | Other |
| DuckDuckBot | DuckDuckGo | DuckDuckGo | Other |
| YandexBot | Yandex | Yandex Search | Other |
What the extensive audit adds
Site crawl
Up to 20 pages, taken from your sitemap first, each read and scored the same way as the free check. Our crawler obeys your robots.txt.
Site-wide issues
Duplicate titles and descriptions, broken pages, canonicals pointing elsewhere, noindex pages, missing H1s, thin pages and images without alt text, ranked by how many pages share them — usually a template, so one fix covers many pages.
Fixes, ranked
Every issue ranked from critical to optional, with the pages it affects, why it matters, the steps, a ready-made snippet and where to click on your platform (WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Next.js, Ghost).
A prompt for every fix
Copy a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Cursor and it walks you through the fix with your site's details. One more prompt takes you through every fix in order.
Action plan
A prioritised list of what to do, with effort and impact for each item.
Files to publish
A ready-to-publish XML sitemap of the pages we crawled, Organization and WebSite schema with the official profile links we found on your site, and the whole fix pack as a Markdown download.
